Park Improvements
We work year-round with Burnley Borough Council’s Green Spaces team and local partners to keep Ightenhill Park welcoming, safe and well-used. Over the years the Friends group has helped deliver improvements such as the ball court, playground and community garden — and we meet monthly to plan what’s next
Triangle Garden
A previously under-used corner is now a small community garden space created and maintained by volunteers. It’s a place for planting days, learning and quiet time in the park, delivered in partnership with the Council and local supporters. Burnley Council
What this achieves
A more attractive, cared-for entrance to the park
Space for community planting and seasonal displays
Regular opportunities for residents to join in
Support this work: Volunteer on a Wednesday morning or donate for plants and materials. (See Events / Support Our Park.)

Pond (Triangle Area)
Alongside the garden, volunteers have improved the small wildlife pond in the triangle area to encourage biodiversity and create a focal point for families and school visits. This sits within our wider partnership approach to park habitats and learning.
What this achieves
Better habitat for insects and birds
A simple outdoor learning stop for local groups
A visible sign of community pride
Support this work: Help with seasonal pond/plant care or sponsor native plants.
Paths & Play
We support the Council’s ongoing programme to keep play and sports areas usable — from small tidy-ups and edging to feeding into plans for formal improvements. Council documents reference continued investment in courts/ball court facilities across the borough, with Ightenhill included in improvement planning discussions.
What this achieves
Safer, cleaner access routes after wet or mossy spells
Play spaces that feel welcoming and cared for
Community input into future upgrades
Support this work: Join a paths tidy or litter-pick; stall fees and donations also help fund small fixes.

Benches
Our volunteers routinely clean, paint and relocate benches (with Council approval) to where they’re most used — especially near the garden, paths and viewing spots. This light-touch work keeps the park pleasant between larger investment cycles. Burnley Council
What this achieves
More comfortable rest points for all ages
Quick wins without waiting for major budgets
Ongoing care that visitors notice
Support this work: Donate towards timber, paint and fixings; volunteer for a bench-refresh morning.

Security & Vandalism Updates
Like many parks, Ightenhill occasionally faces anti-social behaviour. We respond quickly — from litter-clear ups to repairing community assets. A good example is the Little Free Library: when it was vandalised, residents and local businesses helped rebuild and restock it, showing how the community rallies behind the park.
What this achieves
Visible, timely repairs that discourage repeat damage
Community ownership and pride
Safer, cleaner spaces for everyday use
Report or help: If you spot damage, tell us or report via the Council. To help practically, join a “grot-grab” or donate for repairs.
