This week we’re delighted to share a brilliant video from Burnley’s Outdoor Town highlighting the power of local volunteers in Ightenhill Park. It captures exactly what we’re about: neighbours coming together to care for a beautiful green space at the heart of our community.

Why volunteering in Ightenhill Park matters

Parks don’t look after themselves—people do. A couple of hours of your time helps keep paths safe, planting beds blooming, wildlife thriving, and our park welcoming for everyone. It’s good for the park and brilliant for your wellbeing too: fresh air, gentle exercise, and the feel-good buzz of doing something positive close to home.

What you can get involved in

There’s something for every age and ability—no experience needed.

  • Litter picks & light maintenance – quick wins that make a big visual impact.

  • Planting & weeding – help beds and borders flourish through the seasons.

  • Wildlife & habitat care – small actions that support birds, bees, and biodiversity.

  • Events & community days – lend a hand with set-up, refreshments, or family activities.

  • Fundraising & grants – if you’re handy with forms or comms, we’d love your skills.

  • Photography & social media – help us tell the park’s story and inspire others.

No kit? No problem.

You don’t need specialist tools—just come as you are. We’ll guide you, pair you up if you’re new, and provide what’s needed for the task. Families are welcome (under-18s with an adult, please), and we always tailor jobs so everyone can take part comfortably and safely.

When and where

We run regular volunteer sessions throughout the year, plus extra dates for planting and events. Keep an eye on our Facebook updates for upcoming times and meeting points in the park.

Top tips for the day

  • Wear comfy clothes and sturdy shoes.

  • Bring a drink and, if it’s sunny, a hat and sunscreen; if it’s drizzly, a light waterproof.

  • If you have gardening gloves, great—if not, we can help.

Be part of the story

The Outdoor Town video shows how small acts add up to a big difference. That’s exactly what the Friends of Ightenhill Park is all about—steady, practical, cheerful action that keeps our park looking loved. Whether you can spare an hour once a month or fancy getting more involved, you’ll be warmly welcomed.

“I came for the fresh air and stayed for the community.” – A very happy volunteer
