Benches

A little care goes a long way. Our volunteers have been cleaning, repairing and repainting benches across Ightenhill Park — making them safer, smarter and perfectly placed for a breather.

What we’ve done

  • Deep clean & prep: scrubbed moss and algae; rubbed down flaking paint.

  • Repairs: replaced worn slats and loose fixings; fitted new bolt caps where needed.

  • Repaint & protect: weatherproof coatings on timber and metalwork to extend life.

  • Levelling & siting: re-set wobbly feet and, with Council approval, moved some benches to sunnier spots and clearer sightlines.

  • Finishing touches: litter sweep, edging around pads and a quick check of nearby paths.

Why it matters

  • Comfort & safety: no splinters, loose bolts or wobbles.

  • Accessibility: better positioning along main routes and near play areas helps everyone — including wheelchair users and families with prams.

  • Pride in place: cared-for benches lift the whole park and discourage vandalism.

  • Value for money: refurbishing saves costs and keeps good benches in use longer.

Working with Burnley Borough Council

All repairs and relocations are coordinated with Green Spaces so we meet safety standards and follow park guidelines. Urgent issues are reported straight away so they can be made safe.

What’s next

  • A rolling “bench refresh” each season, prioritising high-use routes.

  • Trial name plates/thanks on sponsor benches (subject to Council approval).

  • A small stock of spare slats and fixings so we can react quickly after bad weather.

How you can help

  • Volunteer Wednesdays (most weeks, 9.00–12.30): no experience needed — we’ll show you the ropes.

  • Donate materials: exterior timber stain/paint, rust-treatments, coach bolts, bolt caps, brushes/rollers.

  • Sponsor a bench refresh: from £35 for materials for one bench.

  • Sponsor a new or replacement bench: from £500 (subject to Council approval and siting). We’ll acknowledge support on our channels and, where permitted, on the bench.
